This summer, Chloe, a patient at Shriners Children’s Erie, had the opportunity to visit her local Jeni’s Ice Cream scoop shop to meet with Breanna, a Shriners Children’s patient alum and current Jeni’s employee.
Chloe’s Journey
Chloe, 17, of Brunswick, Ohio, is a high school senior and currently enrolled in Cuyahoga Community College. She enjoys playing percussion in her high school’s marching band and is highly committed to personal growth and academic success. She maintains exceptionally high grades and has tutored students in math and reading. Her experiences as a patient at Shriners Children’s have inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare, where she hopes to provide the same level of care and support that she once received.
Chloe visited Shriners Children’s for a second opinion in 2021 after receiving a diagnosis of scoliosis from another healthcare facility. Her family quickly realized that the level of care provided far surpassed the experience they had at any other hospital. “They made sure to thoroughly explain what was going on and worked with me to decide the best treatment options,” she said. She first tried bracing to slow the progression of her spinal curve and then eventually received vertebral body tethering (VBT) surgery performed by Joshua Pahys, MD. “This procedure was life changing for me. It made my back pain completely go away and overall made me a lot more confident as I didn’t have to walk around wearing a back brace, or feel as if I looked different,” she said.
Chloe now represents Shriners Children’s Erie as a patient ambassador and has given generously of her time and energy to share her story and to represent our mission in the community. She has volunteered at numerous events, connecting with families and supporters, while encouraging greater awareness of the care we provide.
Ice Cream Brings People Together
While at the scoop shop, Chloe received a personal tour and had the chance to taste test all her favorite flavors! Most importantly, Chloe and Bre had the opportunity to chat about their experiences at Shriners Children’s Erie.
When asked about her time at Shriners Children’s, Bre responded, “It was great to be in an environment that was geared towards kids and not a big scary hospital setting.” Bre now leads the fundraising efforts at the Jeni’s shop in Chagrin, OH.
The two also got to chat about the fundraiser Jeni’s is hosting for 31 Days to Amaze. For our 4th year partnering together during 31 Days to Amaze, Jeni’s will be donating 25% of all proceeds from 3-6pm on October 16.
“I’m excited to help raise funds for Shriners Children’s because it was really helpful for my family. I think ice cream and helping a children’s hospital is the perfect pairing,” said Bre.
And when asked about her favorite flavor, she said, “My favorite of the current flavors is double dough. It’s as much cookie dough as you can fit in an ice cream so it’s a classic,”
