A Shreveport Legacy

Led by Shriner and Shreveport businessman James Rowland, Louisiana Shriners proposed to bring the first hospital to Shreveport, having secured land, funding, and an orthopedic surgeon.

On May 12, 1922, hundreds gathered to witness the placing of the cornerstone of the first Shriners Children’s hospital. The first patient – a little girl with clubfoot – was seen on Sept. 16, 1922. What began as a single hospital is now a world-renowned healthcare system. Although much has changed from technology, medical breakthroughs, the polio vaccine, and other transformations, the mission of Shriners Children’s has remained the same.
